The lit mag for foodies.

Or the food mag for litties?

Viction is a new literary magazine obsessed with what, how, and why we eat.

There are plenty of publications that run restaurant recommendations, trendy recipes, or stories of lunchbox moments. Viction is not one of them.

Instead, you might find a piece that finally compares apples to oranges. Or a speculative odyssey on what future humans will farm on Venus. There’ll probably be a poem on soup.

Viction’s first print issue pitch call is open now.

Viction is accepting pitches for literary writing and visual art that tackle food and drink from a fresh (like there’s still soil on it) perspective.

Viction aims to be maximally inclusive of medium, genre, and subject matter. An essay on restaurant culture or a poem about a beloved dish could make a great pitch; so could a puff piece on pica. See below for some inspiration. Issue 01 is not themed, so pitch your wildest idea. With that said, successful pitches will adhere to Viction’s “lit mag for foodies” mission, and the best ones will be shamelessly bold in topic, concept, voice, and/or style.

Draft submissions of short-form writing (~750 words or fewer) and visual art are encouraged. Drafts of longer writing are permissible, but I prefer to work with you from the start to shape the concept.

For Issue 01, I will employ an equal-distribution profit-sharing compensation model for all regular contributors, with the goal of reconciling the value of contributors’ work with Viction’s self-funded budget. I’ll reassess this model for future issues; more information to come when pitches are assigned.

Some inspiration:

  • A satire on Food Network cooking competitions

  • A photo essay on the fetishization of umami

  • A scripted scene of an immigrant couple celebrating their first Valentine’s Day at Burger King

  • A food-themed crossword

  • A queer critique of chicken breast and its role in the protein trend

  • A business proposal for the guinea pig cafe in Fleabag

  • A salt-based mosaic

How to pitch

Please email pitches to ethan@victionmag.com. The deadline is February 8, 2026. Assignments will be made mid–late February, and first drafts will be due mid–late March.

Please include:

  • Subject line: Viction Pitch (Your Name)

  • A brief bio

  • The pitch! Depending on the pitch, this could range from a couple sentences to a couple paragraphs. Please provide a general overview of the concept (I’m open to half-baked ones) with some indication of the piece’s intent, objective, or meaning (this can be as simple as making the reader laugh). Feel free to pitch multiple ideas, but try to include them in one email/thread.

    • If any part of your pitch is already drafted, please state as such and link to/attach the draft.

  • 2–4 links to relevant published or unpublished work. These should, as much as possible, reflect the style of your pitch. Visual artists, please link to a portfolio however you prefer.

  • Visual artists, please note if you are open to illustrating written pieces from other contributors.
